Our members/readers might be aware that the Magalies River is an important conservation area, and has been identified as a sensitive catchment area in the Gauteng Nature Conservation Plan.

A very rare fish species, the Marico Barb (Barbus motebensis - Afr Ghieliemientjie), can be found in this water system. This tiny little fish (maximum length about 8cm) can only be found in South Africa, and is indicated as endangered on the IUCN Red Data List.
